“The incidence of isle children
with autism has increased at an
alarming rate in recent years,
and nobody knows why”
By Helen Altonn
haltonn@starbulletin.com
In 2002 the Hawaii state Department of Education categorized more than 720 kids with autism out of about 23,000 in special education, or about 3.1 percent, compared with 1 percent nationally. Dr. William Bolman, a child psychiatrist and retired University of Hawaii professor, said in 25 years of teaching he saw only three or four patients with autism. Now he has 200. And it is not just autism that has increased, Bolman added, noting similar jumps in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and childhood depression cases.
"If you have three different clinical syndromes ... there's something underlying it, not just genetics," he said.
It costs an estimated $60 billion to $90 billion a year to serve the current autism population, and the annual cost in the next decade in the United States will be $300 billion to $400 billion, Lee Grossman said, but two-thirds of the cost can be reduced with early diagnosis and intensive intervention.
Dr. Margaret Koven, a developmental psychologist, said the huge upswing in cases in recent years cannot be attributed solely to changes in autism definitions or earlier diagnosis.
"People have jumped on all kinds of things for causes -- vaccines, water, chemical pollution. ... We don't have conclusive evidence about any cause."
Graceful Earth Inc. through additional support & funding will provide this evidence at a considerable discount testing about 100 affected children in areas of Hawaii with questionable environmental concerns. Through forensic and genetic testing they can reveal toxic exposure to possible environmental contaminants often at the route cause of these disorders. They will also seek funding or support to get this project documented through media and film. Specific credit for any support generated in making this project a reality will be given.
Your support will provide forensic and genetic testing for Hawaiian children who may have been affected by environmental contaminants and stricken with behavioral disorders like Autism and ADD as a result.
Based on the data and analysis from the Department of Education Department of Health 2003 report Child and Adolescent Mental Health Division / Early Intervention Sectionfor the full year, the outlier to the general pattern of acceptable system performance and child status is the Nanakuli Complex. Aggregate data is demonstrating concern across many indicators of child status including learning progress, responsible behavior, child safety, emotional well-being, and caregiver functioning. In the Nanakuli Review, indicators identified planning as an area with considerable issues.
Areas of Concern for the Year
As reported in the previous Sustainability Report (April 2003), six complexes did not achieve the performance goal during the year. The six complexes are Kahuku (83% system performance, 100% child status), Hilo/Lapahoehoe (78% system performance, 100% child status), Farrington (78% system performance, 100% child status), Pahoa (69% system performance, 100% child status), Central Kauai (83% system performance, 100% child status), and Nanakuli (64% system performance, 64% child status). Of these six complexes, all but one were found to have 100% of youth reviewed with acceptable child status. Full discussion of the trends and patterns of the six complexes, as well as the complexes where child status was of concern (Ka’u, Campbell, Kohala, and Nanakuli), can be found in the previous Sustainability Report (April 2003).
Potential Benefits
1. Stimulate greater awareness between the relationship between environmental contaminant exposure and behavioral disorders
2. Reduce future incidences of childhood diseases by exposing forensic evidence which may be related to the etiology of autism rates and other related health challenges
3. Reduce costs to insurance companies and state agencies
4. Educate family members of autistic and behavioral challenged children as well as city officials by providing credible scientific evidence through forensic hair analysis and genetic testing
5. Reveal any hidden dangers or relationships between industrial pollutants / heavy metals released in similar residential locations of challenged subjects
6. Compel city and state officials to remove any offending toxins from these residential areas and move toward zero-emissions waste management technologies
7. Lower insurance premiums to those people who voluntarily offer to submit to or perform these forensic and genetic tests allowing more money for those who truly need it. Offer said testing to normal / low risk populations in an effort to better pinpoint higher risk clients while providing better services, a more affordable plan and rewarding individuals who are able to take better care of their health or who have the good fortune of living in cleaner neighborhoods. Customizing insurance risks for health insurance providers and their patients.
8. Reduce bleaching of our coral reefs while strengthening the fish population and better maintaining or protecting against erosion of our beaches
9. Provide affected children and adults with the appropriate therapies needed to properly treat their specific needs
10. Stimulate any clean up efforts determined necessary through water, dust and soil sample testing.
Plan
Graceful Earth agrees to provide hair analysis services through our CLIA licensed laboratories and if applicable further genetic testing as well.
Each applicant or participant will be required to do the following:
1. Fill out a questionnaire which will be kept confidential by HIPAA law unless and as deemed appropriate they wish to waive that right in order to expose their results for the documentary.
2. Live in specific locations related to the environmental concerns of this project
3. Have a specific mental illness, delay, disability, mental, emotional, physical, neurological or behavioral disorder as diagnosed by a competent health care provider.
Graceful Earth Inc., through her VP Kenneth Friedenberg, BM (MS, ND, Phd to be completed) will attempt to acquire funding and support in order to document the entire project with a film crew (i.e Olelo or otherwise).
Capacity
1. Graceful Earth Inc. specializes in offering customized forensic and genetic tests and is uniquely qualified to interpret the results by correlating symptoms and diagnostics through our questionnaire procedure with consultations for the outcome of the findings.
2. Graceful Earth Inc. is located in Hawaii where they can visit each chosen resident to properly draw the hair or saliva specimens needed.
3. Our full service medical labs have been in operation for over 30 years. Some of the analytical equipment used is Inductive Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) and ICP-Optical (or Atomic) Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction).
Certifications:
Lab is certified to perform ApoE analysis on biological samples.
Our protocols for genetic testing are performed in accordance with international protocols which have been approved by the FDA. Our ApoE tests are recognized and reimbursed by the German, Swiss and Dutch private health insurances.
License number for APO E testing - Ringversuch FV2/06 Teilnehmer 0003601, Deutsche Vereinte Gesellschaft für Klinische Chemie und Laboratoriumsmedizin e.V.
US and German Labs Quality Assurance
Lab follows standard operating procedures and adheres to a Quality Assurance Plan
• US laboratory procedures follow CLIA and US EPA guidelines
• Certification from the DGKL in Germany, for APO E genotyping and several other genes
• Lab is certified in ring testing assuring that our results are reliable.
• Our ApoE certification meets European and international standards.
• US labs participate in College of American Pathology audits
• All data is kept for inspection for 2 years
• Employ toxic metal limits in blood and urine as set by the Centers for Disease Control
• Instrument accuracy and precision are evaluated and maintained by analyzing certified standards and reference materials as well as in-house standards.
• Personnel have pertinent education, and pass demonstrations of capability. Lab staff includes doctors of chemistry, medicine and nutrition.
• All test results are considered confidential.
4. Being located in Hawaii, Graceful Earth Inc. has the distinct advantage of being “hands on” to family, participants and film crew members in the documentary.
